I am a proud African!!

I used to read a lot about race issues when I was younger; and I am still overwhelmed with sadness when I remember the story of Steve Biko. Even though I had an understanding of what racial discrimination was, I could never appreciate it full until I found myself in America.

Blog Visitor: Why is it easier for divorced women to find men?

Hi TAC, I have been following you blog for sometime and you are doing a good job.
I have noticed that divorced women find it very easy to bag another man after their first marriage collapses. Where I live a certain woman moved back to her parents home after getting divorced and just after 3 years she is getting married again. She had a kid with her previous husband.

Is it a case of overfriendliness?

The first time I went to a salon to get my hair fixed here in the States, it was quite a task calling up different salons to know their rates and also book an appointment. Eventually, I was able to get a place I was comfortable enough with. What actually influenced me to choose that particular Salon was because the owner had an African Accent.

Beautiful Fall weather

So its Fall Season!!! This is officially my first fall and I am loving it!! Even though I am enjoying the cold weather, what I actually love about fall is the leaves changing color and falling. Wow! It just looks so beautiful with different colors of trees; from red, to orange to yellow and their leaves falling

Blog Visitor: My life in America has been awesome

I decided to send in this mail because I think you are giving a skewed impression about living in the USA. I want to share with other blog readers that living in America is not as bad as TAC makes it seem.

A Handkerchief maketh a lady

When it comes to issues relating to being a proper lady, my mother's disciplinarian hands and mouth  never failed. She taught my sister and I how to look, talk and act like a lady. Her main reason was that she didn't want to be insulted by other people when we eventually grew up and got married. Apparently she was most likely to be blamed for any action or inaction on our part. Growing up, I remember anytime I did something wrong she would always say to me in anger, "African Chic, I would not allow you to let people insult me that I didn't bring you up well, never!!"

Why dont they know anything about Africa?

We all hear stories about Africans being asked questions about the nature of Africa. I used to think some of this questions were made up, because they sounded plain ridiculous. Before moving to the US, at least I knew a few things about the country. I knew it was divided into a number of states, I knew they had different accents(True blood et al) depending on where you lived, I just had some sort of general idea of life here. Even though nothing could prepare me for the reality on the ground, the little knowledge I had helped, because not everything was a complete shock to me.

Ghana is hard!!!

Last week I went for a meeting with the Ghanaian community and I was pleasantly surprised to see a former church member in there. He is based in Ghana and he sometimes comes to the USA for holidays and I was excited to see him because I could catch some Ghana news from him. So after the meeting when we were socializing, I went over to greet and indulge him in a little conversation. I asked him how Ghana was doing and he instantly replied that “eeii Ghana, e no dey bee kraa…..things are very hard now”.

Hon. Dr. Chief. Emperitus.Mr. so so and so

Ha! Titles....I really don't know what there is about titles that Africans are crazy about. Through the academic, religious and political fields, there are all manors of titles that people either adorn on themselves or are given by others. In Ghana, if you don't have any title at all, at least you find others calling you sister, aunty, brother, uncle, mummy or daddy. There is an unwritten taboo to call an elder person by the first name.

Confessions of a blogger

I have never considered myself a writer. On the other hand, I am an avid reader and I can just be as happy if I am only surrounded by the most intriguing books. Having been introduced into the blogging world, and the success of bloggers like Linda, Bella Naija and Co, it seemed so easy to establish a blog and make money from it. I always said to myself that  'ah this is so easy if Linda can do it and make millions from it, I can also do it and earn a lot'.

What about Maheeda?

Over the weekend the Nigerian blogosphere was buzzed with the news of singer Maheeda's instagram account being blocked. Her account was blocked by Instagram simply because she violated the no nudity policy by posting a picture of the privates of a male fan.

If I were you, I would have killed myself

We had all the types of personalities in my class back in secondary school. There were the very quiet ones, the loud ones, the troublesome ones, the cool ones and so on. Naturally, people formed cliques based on the people they could relate with the most.

That Bicycle life

The last time I rode a bicycle in Ghana was when I was a kid, I think about 6 years. My dad got it for us as part of enriching our childhood experience. I really enjoyed riding the bycycles because it made me feel like an adult. I looked forward to run errands for my parents because I would be feeling like a cool kid riding her pink bicycle in the neighborhood. I have no recollection of what happended to the bicycle,. I think I out grew it or something.

Too much bills!!

In America, the system is designed to encourage owing in one way or the other. Almost everybody has some bills to pay at the end of the month. From car loans, to student loans, to phone bills, to credit card debt, the list is endless.

How far will your Government go to save you?

I just finished watching Captain Philips and I must confess, anytime I see such movies I always fantasize about being in the US army. I just love the way they are able to get things done promptly. For those of you who haven't watched it, the movie depicts the events surrendering the kidnap of an American captain by Somali pirates in 2009. The captain was eventually rescued by the US navy. The movie was based on the true life accounts by the captain and some members of the crew.

What would you do in this situation

As most of you would know, we girls like to gossip discuss a lot. Every close friend you confide in has another close friend they trust and they also have their won friends they trust. Thus most times, anything you tell your 'close' friend would end up going round in a circle and coming back to you.
So it was in this same light that a close friend of mine told me of how she heard about a friend of a friend's situation.

Writers Block :(

These past few days, I have tried to write, but absolutely nothing comes up. I open my blog and proceed to create a new post but nada..... I cant seem to think of anything to write about. Even when an idea comes up, I find myself writing just a few lines and that's it.

Amusement Park Fun!!

I love to try out new things. I love the thrill that comes with discovering the unknown. And that was why I was very eager to try the rides at amusement parks. Even though I am scared of heights, I still wanted to have the experience of being swung 20 feet up high, Or dipping down a sharp 80 degress at full speed.

Embarrasing question to blog readers

Ok so I realized that right from childhood, occasionally some small whitish substance comes out from my throat. And they smell so bad they could wake a dead person up. I have always been fascinated by it so anytime it comes I smash it and naturally I smell it.

Why don't you start your own Business?

Anytime I talk to my friends who are overseas, we all agree on one thing; there a lot of opportunities in Africa. The surprising thing about this fact is that,  most indigenes are not aware of it.
When I was in Ghana, I never  realized this, because I very much concentrated on the problems around.
