When I was in Ghana, I loved any westernized food. The burgers, the french fries, the pizzas, anything which had a fancy name and was not usually prepared at home was fine by me. I remember my university days where my girls and I will save and wait for Tuesday(on Tuesdays you get an extra pizza) just so we could buy Pizza. And at the time if any guy was toasting you, they had to buy something fancy from a fast food joint or else they had no chance.
Now, living in America my appreciation for Ghanaian dishes has gone over moon, and i am always looking forward to preparing some delicious home made Ghanaian dishes. The thing is in my opinion, American food is not very nice.

I am a lover of spicy food, and in the house I grew up in, you haven't prepared a perfect meal until everyone is fanning their tongues. Over here in America, I find the food to be either bland tasting or too sweet. It seems to me that they add sugar to the meats because I really cant explain why chicken should taste so sugary.
If you a re a typical African, and you come to America I think it you would be better off experimenting ethnic food(Indian, Thai, Greek etc) than the all American eateries. Unless you are a die hard fan of pizzas, burgers etc then you would'nt have any problem but even at that you are bound to get tired at some point.
American food is not all bad though, I have grown to love eating salads, and my favorite is a grilled chicken Caesars salad. It took me a while though for me to love salads as I wasn't used to 'chewing leaves' as we say it back in Ghana.
And also one thing I realized is that, over in Ghana the carbohydrates potion of the meal is considered to be the main dish, with the protein portion being the side dish.In America, the reverse is the case. The main meal is the protein portion and it comes accompanied with a side of carbohydrates. So for an example in Ghana, you would have restaurants listing Rice with chicken whereas in America it is Chicken with a side of rice.
That said I would pick my banku and okra soup over any burger or pizza anytime any day.
With all these......lol I will sure bring along my own nig food when coming, atleast things I can't easily get there or the ones that are too expensive, hot chilly can't be missing on my list.thanks dear

DeleteYou are so right. Sugar all over the place! I try and eat African food where I can help it. I am looking forward to when I take a holiday to my native Nigeria. I will be chowing down on nothing other than Amala, Okra soup with Egusi and I would also love to taste that foul smelling Goat, the one with a strong smell but tastes so good. I will then wash it down with fresh palm wine. Aaah I am hungry already.Stumbled upon your blog under Ladun liadi blog and I will be coming here too.

ReplyDeleteYes the goat, its been a headache getting goat meat over here, and one time I drove by a farm that was rearing goats. We quickly made a U-turn so we could stop by the farm and buy a goat. When we asked if we could buy it, so they kill it and cut the meat for us, the terrified farm girl replied that "No, they are our pets, we don't eat them, you can only look at them"... We just entered the car and drove off.
DeleteDang! Y'all scared the gal! Lol!

Lolllz!couldn't help myself,nice blog!saw ur link from stella's blog.Rubby u are very funny.lol
DeleteOMG! I couldn't stop laughing at this comment.
Delete@ Anon.8:07, ur comment made my taste buds jump. I'm a Nigerian & everything u just mentioned is pure heaven. Since I've been in the US for a little while, I have grown to love American food. Thank God I have my mum here that cooks Nigerian food but I love pizza; I don't eat burgers as much (on a diet)..lol. All the same, let's not forget that America is filled with vast cultures and nationalities & it'll be a shame to stay closed minded & not indulge. I remember when my boyfriend then, now my husband was trying to get me to try sushi. I swore on my life then, that I would never eat such because it's just raw fish. Boy was I wrong! There are different kinds of sushi & it doesn't have to be raw. Speaking of Thai food, oh my! How delicious. I also love Spanish food. My husband is Puerto Rican & I love love love Puerto Rican food. So, I'll say indulge in other nationalities & see what you like.
ReplyDeleteFor me, I love to explore other ethnic food, and so far Greek is my favorite. I love love their Gyros. I am yet to try sushi tho..
DeleteOh ya! Gyros are definitely one of my many delights....

ReplyDeleteHi Damie, as I mentioned in my post you should definitely try other ethnic food apart from the normal American fast food, there is a wide variety and my favorites are Greek, Thai and Indian food. All the best in your journey
