So I mentioned that the first time I arrived in America, it was during the winter season. I love cold weather, the tropical kind of cold. I was happiest when the clouds turn dark, as it is about to rain. If I was home I would always coil up in my bed and sleep, and I always had the best dreams. The sun and heat were not my friends. I didn't like them and they didn't like me.Now my imagination of winter was that it was probably as cold as the lowest temperature of A/C in my room. I normally reduce the A/C temperature in my room to 16 Degrees every night, and I was excited at the prospects of enjoying cold weather outside without the help of an A/C.
Since my husband was meeting me in New York(which gets very cold in the winter), he asked me to dress warm but I told myself that "ah but me I can handle cold weather", of course I had never experienced the real cold weather.
So in my jeans, tan top, a blazer and a pair of sandals I made my way out of the airport. Well no one told me to run back inside. I really do not know how to describe the cold I felt, it was heavy and biting. It was a difficult to breath, and as I mentioned in my previous post, I immediately felt a sharp pain in my feet, and it actually got frozen for the few seconds that I was outside.
For some reason, I always believed that cold weather enhanced your natural skin color, and a visit abroad would automatically give your skin that silky glow. This is what I expected for myself and nothing less.
Unfortunately, I noticed that the winter weather was rather having an adverse effect on my skin. My skin was always dry(I never had dry skin), and itchy. Even when I smeared on a good amount of pomade, my skin would still dry up after exposure to the cold. On one of my phone conversations with my mother, she made a remark on how I my 'color would be so bright' by now, and she didn't even believe me when I told her that I was having problems with my skin. This was very uncomfortable for me because sometimes I scratched too deep into my skin causing sores.
Another issue I had with the winter season was that you couldn't just put on a simple outfit when stepping out, you had to make sure you dressed warm enough, and a short trip to the strip mall in your neighborhood would mean you had to spend time piling on layers of clothes.
Now winter is not all bad, because I get to wear boots, and having that I never got to wear boots in Ghana, I am glad to have the opportunity to try it out over here.
