RACISM STILL EXISTS IN AMERICA :(

On my birthday, hubby and I decided to go on a road trip to California. This was about a 16 hours journey so we knew we would definitely have to stop and sleep over somewhere. We set out late afternoon and by night time we were still in our state(OR). Now as some may know Oregon is a predominantly white state and most of the few blacks are concentrated in the big cities. By now we were on the outskirts of Oregon, and with our fuel on a low level we decided to stop by the next town we see.
Very soon, we had checked into one of the motels along the road. A little advice here,  if you can avoid small town motels when travelling please do. It was one of the scariest experiences I have ever had. Seriously, my heart was pumping all through the night. Even as we were moving our luggage to the room, there were thick tall bearded men with tattoos all over their skin. And the kind of stares they were giving us enough to spoil my birthday mood.
I couldn't sleep well that night, and I was afraid that someone was going to break into our room. And it didn't help that the walls were so thin that you could practically hear everything the person next door was doing. The sound that annoyed me most was the flashing of toilets.
Thankfully morning came soon enough, and after checking out, we decided to find a place to have breakfast. We were directed to a nearby restaurant by the receptionist, and we made our way over there.
As soon as we entered we were greeted and asked to wait to be ushered to our seats. Now this was a large restaurant, with the eating area divided into the left and right side. Even though most people were at the right side eating, there were more than enough number of tables for potential customers.
Now the left side was very, very empty and I even thought that side was reserved for lunch only.

To our amazement we were asked to sit at the left side. I didn't want to analyze that too much until I realized that all other white customers who came in after us were ushered into the right side of the Restaurant.
What was even the most irritating was that it felt like they didn't want to serve us. After sitting, we had to wait for an extra 30 minutes just for our orders to be taken. I really wanted to get up and leave the place.

Living in Ghana, there was no way you would feel different, because apart from the different shades in skin colour we were all the same. There was no way you would stand out in a crowd just because you were black, because everybody else is just like you. Going through this experience made me appreciate what a lot of blacks in America used to go through and are still going through.

To be treated differently just because of your skin color is the most painful thing anybody would ever have to experience!

  1. Wow! I can't believe that form of blatant racism still exists in broad daylight!

    1. It does exist. My husband went searching for a barbing saloon to cut his hair using the GPS. He got to a place, a white guy called out, Hey Nigger! Fuck you! Giving the finger. My husband, quietly turned back. I then understood the anger and aggression of the blacks. There are some places you don't make the mistake of going.

    2. It is not the same Ade. Believe me. Tribalism only shows up during employment and marriages and Politics, it is not an insulting or belittling attitude making you feel like shit!. You just got to experience it to understand. My BIL went searching for an address in a white dominated neighborhood. He saw a couple and stopped to ask them directions. He still missed it, turning in circles. This couple stopped him and told him he was making them feel uncomfortable. He was angry, he decided to use his British accent to ask them if they did not notice his car plate number which shows he was from a different state? That if he was a white guy, would they have made such a comment? He eventually got the place.

    3. True, if more people are fore-warned, they definitely would be fore-armed. That way these insensitive people would be put out of business!

    4. I wish I remember the name. All I know is it wasn't one of those popular chain restaurants. it was just one of those restaurants in a small town. All I know is next time we aint stopping in a small town!

    5. Yes, this small towns are stuck in the old way of doing things. That is why blacks are concentrated in the cities.

  6. That in Oregon? I'm quite shocked I must say! And here I was thinking that Oregon is one of the most liberal states in the US. I used to think that if I were to go live in the US, it would be Massachusetts, Carlifornia or Oregon. But then I hear this! SMH! Honestly I'm surprised you waited 30mins, I would have walked out as soon as I had caught wind of what was really going on. Left to those kinds of people, we would still be wiping our butts with straw instead of toilet paper!

    1. I think Oregon is pretty liberal in the city but we found ourselves on the outskirts, close to the border between Oregon and Cali.. Maybe you should also consider Seattle,WA. For one they are more liberal and diverse than Oregon
